STRUCTURE
The School consists of three departments:
• Department of Ecology and Neoecology;
• Department of Environmental Safety and Environmental Education;
• Department of Environmental Monitoring and Management.
Also, the School’s subdivisions are the Eco-Toxicological Laboratory and Eco-Analytical Laboratory.
FACULTY
More than 25 instructors, including the academician of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, eight doctors of sciences, full professors and 17 PhDs, associate professors are engaged in scientific research and training of specialists.
The scientific groups of the School are headed by the leading scientists:
• Sviatoslav Baliuk — Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Full Professor;
• Alla Nekos — Doctor of Geography, Full Professor;
• Hanna Titenko — PhD in Geography, Associate Professor.
TRAINING ACTIVITY
Training of ecologists is conducted on a broad interdisciplinary ground based on a whole range of sciences — chemistry, biology, geography, geology, etc.
The training consists of the cycles of humanitarian and socio-economic disciplines (history of Ukraine, philosophy, cultural studies, economic theory, political studies, sociology, psychology, etc.), natural science disciplines (higher mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science, systemology, etc.), and professionally-oriented disciplines (environmental studies, fundamentals of general ecology and neoecology, environmental monitoring and protection, environmental monitoring and management, environmental and technologenic safety, etc.).
Educational practices are held in the Crimea, the Carpathians, Kharkiv region. Students undergo their on-the-job training in various institutions and organizations by their choice in almost all Ukraine’s regions, and in some cases, abroad.
RESEARCH ACTIVITY
The School offers postgraduate and doctoral studies, has the Thesis Committee on Constructive Geography and Rational Use of Natural Resources.
The School publishes the University Bulletin, series Ecology, as well as the journal “The Environmental Protection from Anthropogenic Load” and “The Human and Environment. Problems of Neoecology”.
The School is conducting scientific activity in the following areas: environmental safety, research on the impact of pollution on food quality, soil and environmental studies, assessment of natural resource potential of Kharkiv region, landscape and environmental research, aerospace topsoil research (radiogeography), environmental education, environmental examination, environmental management and audit, environmental activities management, prevention and liquidation of emergency situations.
EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS FOR GRADUATES
The ecologist’s employment scope is rather broad. it includes environmental protection management, state environmental inspections, environmental control, nature reserves, and other subdivisions of the profile ministry system, research institutes, higher educational institutions, etc.
